Thank You, Race Crew!

A sincere and heartfelt thank you to the more than 4,000 volunteers who came together to help orchestrate the 11th annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. On behalf of the over 21,000 runners and walkers who participated, your hard work is appreciated. It was a massive crew of volunteers who made the day an overwhelming success, assisting in every aspect of the event, from setup to pre-registration, the Health & Fitness Expo, to the start line and the finish line and each of the water stations along the course,.  

Thank you so much for your contribution to the 11th annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego.

Help others have fun!

Volunteer at the Health & Fitness Expo:

Thursday, May 28 (set up), Friday, May 29 & Saturday, May 30.

  • Issue registered runners their race numbers
  • Distribute race participant T-shirts
  • Distribute race Goodie Bags
  • Stock and sell souvenirs

 

Volunteer at the Start Line - Sunday, May 31

Start Corrals

Each corral is numbered and corresponds with the runner's number. Race Crew Volunteers are needed to help the runners find the correct corral and to maintain order within the corral.

Check runner's gear before the race

Gear Check

Each runner is issued a gear check bag to be used for any personal items. The gear bags are labeled and are numerically placed in a UPS truck. Race Crew Volunteers are needed to check these gear bags in the correct UPS truck and assist runners in this process.

Bus Unloading

Race Crew Volunteers are needed to help unload the runners from shuttle buses at the Start and direct them to the refreshment tables and gear check.

Refreshments

Race Crew Volunteers are needed to set up and distribute water, bagels, coffee and more to the runners before the start of the race.

Medical Tent

Volunteers are needed to staff medical tents and assist runners with minor injuries along the course.

 

Volunteer at the Finish Line -Sunday, May 31

Checked Gear Retrieval

Race Crew Volunteers are needed to retrieve checked gear from the trucks and return gear to each runner.

Chip Removal

Each runner is issued a timing chip that is placed on his/her shoe. Race Crew Volunteers are needed to remove these chips from their shoes so that the runners’ times can be recorded.

Prepare and serve refreshments
to runners at the Finish Line

Refreshment Zone

Race Crew Volunteers are needed to distribute water, bananas, oranges, energy bars and other food items after runners cross the Finish Line.

Awards

Each runner is presented a finisher's medal. Race Crew Volunteers are needed to award a medal to each runner. Children under the required age of 14 may volunteer at the Award Area of the finish line. Please inquire.

Pedestrian Traffic Control

Race Crew volunteers are needed to help direct the runners to the bus and parking area.

Medical Tent

Volunteers are needed to staff medical tents and assist runners with minor injuries along the course.

Various Locations along the Course

Groups of 10 or more individuals are needed to hand out water, sports drink and energy gel along the course. See the Water Stations page for more information.

Volunteers are needed to staff medical tents and assist runners with minor injuries along the course.

2008 Race Crew Appreciation Drawing Details and Restrictions:

  1. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old as of Wednesday, May 28, 2008, to win.
  2. All volunteers must sign in at each designated shift and complete the entire shift to be eligible for the drawing.
  3. Volunteers will be entered in the prize drawing for each shift for which they register and complete. Work two shifts – two chances to win.
  4. Volunteers eligible are those who work any Water Station, Medical Station or General Race Crew shift (for example: Set-up, Expo, Start Line, Finish Line, Breakdown, VIP, Concert).
  5. Winner will be notified by July 18, 2008.
  6. Airline tickets subject to availability. Winner pays all taxes, fees, personal and incidental expenses.
  7. Rewards can be redeemed only through Elite Racing. Winner cannot redeem prize directly with Southwest Airlines.
  8. Airline tickets must be booked by March 1, 2009.
  9. All travel must be completed by May 15, 2009.

 To me, a marathon is about endurance, strength, dedication, and optimism. With each step, we show others that we will overcome any obstacle in order to get closer to our goal. And with this marathon, I want to put all of my steps together towards one step in building a symbol of strength and endurance for all to see.
